MB to GB: How Many MB in a GB? (Data Size Explained)

·3 min read

There are 1,024 megabytes (MB) in a gigabyte (GB) using the binary standard computers use, or 1,000 MB using the decimal standard drive makers use. To convert MB to GB, divide by 1,024 (or 1,000). Here's why there are two answers, the full ladder of units, and a free data size converter.

The data size ladder

  • 1 KB = 1,024 bytes
  • 1 MB = 1,024 KB
  • 1 GB = 1,024 MB
  • 1 TB = 1,024 GB

The Data Size Converter handles any conversion from bytes to terabytes.

Why 1,000 vs 1,024?

Computers count in binary, so a "true" GB is 2³⁰ = 1,073,741,824 bytes (1,024 MB). Storage manufacturers use the decimal 1,000 MB = 1 GB, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as ~931 GB in your operating system — no storage is missing, it's just two definitions of the same word.

Quick examples

  • 500 MB ≈ 0.49 GB
  • 2,048 MB = 2 GB
  • 5,000 MB ≈ 4.88 GB

Bottom line

Divide MB by 1,024 for the binary GB your computer reports, or by 1,000 for the marketing figure. The Data Size Converter does both instantly.
