Smith Machine Weight Calculator
Total Smith machine load from your gym's bar weight and the plates on each side.
Many Planet Fitness clubs use Matrix Smith machines. Matrix lists 15 lb on the Aura G3-PL62 and 25 lb on the Magnum and G3 Smith, so check the sticker on the frame.
Count one side only. The calculator doubles it.
Why it feels different from a barbell: the rails balance the bar for you, so your stabilising muscles do less work, and the bearings add a little friction. There is no published conversion factor, so we show the real load and do not guess a free-weight number.
Want a max to train from? Log Smith lifts separately and use the one-rep max calculator with the total load shown here.
About the Smith Machine Weight Calculator
A Smith machine bar does not weigh 45 lb. Most commercial machines are counterbalanced, so the bar starts somewhere between about 15 and 35 lb depending on the brand. That makes it easy to log the wrong number. This Smith machine weight calculator adds the right starting weight to your plates. Choose your gym or machine (Planet Fitness, Matrix, Life Fitness, Hammer Strength, Precor, Technogym and others), tap the plates you loaded on one side, and it shows the total load, the bar weight it used, the weight per side and the same figure in kg or lb. Not sure which machine you have? Pick the unknown option and it shows a range.
How much does a Smith machine bar weigh?
Most commercial Smith machine bars start at 15 to 35 lb (about 7 to 16 kg), not 45 lb. The most common figures are 20 lb on a Life Fitness Signature, 25 lb on a Matrix Magnum and 30 lb on a Hammer Strength. The number that matters is the starting weight (also called starting resistance or bar take-off), which is what you actually lift before adding plates. It is usually printed on a sticker on the frame. If you can't find it, a range of about 6 to 35 lb covers the machines we checked plus lighter counterbalanced units.
Smith machine bar weight by brand
These are the values the calculator uses. "Manufacturer spec" means we read it on the maker's own page or sell sheet. "Dealer listing" means a retailer page quoting the maker's figure. "Estimate" means we could not find a published number.

| Rogue / other rack-mounted Smith | 30–45 lb | Usually no | Vertical | Estimate |
Older and newer versions of the same machine can differ, and gyms sometimes mix brands. Treat the sticker on your machine as the final word.
Why a Smith bar is lighter than a 45 lb Olympic bar
- Counterbalance. Most commercial Smith machines hang a weight inside the frame on a cable and pulley. It pulls up on the bar and cancels part of its mass. A bar that weighs 40 lb of steel can start at 20 lb.
- Guided rails. The bar rides on bearings along fixed rails, so it doesn't need an Olympic bar's length, sleeves or whip. Some makers, such as Precor and REP, skip the counterbalance and use a lighter bar instead, which is why they start at 15 to 16 kg.
- Angle barely matters. Many rails tilt 7°. The share of the load that acts along a 7° rail is cos(7°), about 99.3%, and about 98.2% on an 11° rail. So the tilt changes the weight by 1 to 2% at most.
Worked example
You are on a Life Fitness Signature Smith (20 lb start) with one 45 lb and one 25 lb plate on each side.
- Plates per side: 45 + 25 = 70 lb.
- Both sides: 70 × 2 = 140 lb.
- Add the bar: 140 + 20 = 160 lb, which is 72.6 kg.
- Same plates on a free barbell: 140 + 45 = 185 lb. Logging "185" for the Smith set would overstate it by 25 lb.
On an unknown machine the same plates give 146 to 175 lb, which is why it pays to find the sticker.
Smith machine vs free weights: an honest comparison
A calculator can tell you the load on the bar. It can't tell you what that load is "worth" on a free barbell, and we don't apply a conversion factor because no reliable one is published. Here is what actually changes:
- Balance: the rails stop the bar drifting forward, back or sideways, so your stabilising muscles do less work. Most people can move more on a Smith machine for this reason.
- Bar path: the path is fixed, so you adjust your body to the bar instead. Foot position changes how a squat or press feels a lot more than on a free bar.
- Friction: bearings and bushings add a small, machine-specific drag that varies with age and maintenance.
- Safety: the hooks and safety stops let you train close to failure without a spotter, which is the Smith machine's main advantage.
The practical rule: track Smith lifts as their own exercise, always on the same machine, and progress them against themselves. If you want training percentages, enter your Smith total into the one-rep max calculator and use the result for Smith work only. To switch any figure between units, the weight converter handles lb and kg.
How to use the Smith Machine Weight Calculator
- 01Choose pounds or kilograms, then pick your gym or Smith machine brand. Use Custom if the frame sticker shows a starting weight, or I don't know to see a range.
- 02Tap the plate buttons once for every plate you loaded on one side of the bar. Tap a plate chip to remove it, or type the per-side total instead.
- 03Read the total load, the bar weight used and its source. The calculator doubles the per-side plates and adds the starting bar weight.
- 04Log the total, and compare Smith lifts with other Smith lifts rather than with your free-barbell numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the Smith machine bar weigh at Planet Fitness?
Usually 15 to 25 lb. Many Planet Fitness clubs use Matrix Smith machines, and Matrix lists 15 lb on the Aura G3-PL62 and 25 lb (11.3 kg) on the Magnum and G3 Smith. The starting weight is normally printed on a sticker on the frame, so check it before you log your lift.
How much does a Hammer Strength Smith machine bar weigh?
Life Fitness lists a starting resistance of 30 lb (13.6 kg) for both the 7° angled Hammer Strength Smith Machine and the Hammer Strength Plate-Loaded Vertical Smith. Loaded with one 45 lb plate per side, that is 120 lb in total.
How much does a Smith machine bar weigh in kg?
Most commercial Smith bars start at about 7 to 16 kg. Examples: Life Fitness Signature 9 kg, Matrix Magnum 11.3 kg, Hammer Strength 13.6 kg, REP rack attachment about 15 kg and Precor Discovery 16 kg. A standard Olympic bar is 20 kg.
Do you count the bar weight on a Smith machine?
Yes, if you want your logged weight to be the real load. Add the starting weight from the machine's sticker or manual to both sides of plates. Two 25 lb plates per side on a 20 lb bar is 70 lb, not 50 lb. Just keep Smith numbers separate from free-weight numbers.
Is 135 on a Smith machine the same as 135 on a barbell?
The load can be the same, but it will usually feel easier on the Smith machine because the rails balance the bar for you. Note that two 45s on a Smith machine is not 135 lb. On a 20 lb Smith bar it is 110 lb, on a 30 lb Hammer Strength bar it is 120 lb.
Why is my Smith machine bar so light?
Most commercial Smith machines hide a counterweight in the frame, connected to the bar by cables and pulleys. It pulls up on the bar and cancels part of its weight, so a heavy steel bar starts at 15 to 30 lb. Machines without a counterbalance, such as the Precor Discovery (16 kg) or rack attachments, start heavier.
